Citizen Astronaut Dee Chester visits the El Segundo Public Library - El Segundo, CA

Dee Chester, Citizen Astronaut/Space Historian/Educator will help close out the month of March’s Women’s History events on Wednesday, March 29 th at 6:30pm in the Sue Carter Community Room at the El Segundo Public Library. Dee has developed presentations for educators, students and museums and has spoken at national, regional and local levels. She was a science educator for 25 years, teaching astronautics and anatomy and physiology. She was also a museum curator, hosting the largest collection of manned space craft.

Dee’s love of the sky took her the join the Civil Air Patrol where she rose to the position of Director of Aerospace Education for California Wing. Other duties included Squadron Commander and pilot, flying search and rescue missions. Dee holds the rank of Lt Colonel with many awards and commendations. She was honored with ‘The Frank G. Brewer Aerospace Award’ and ‘California Wing Aerospace Education Officer of the Year.’ Now Dee serves as Pacific Region Internal Aerospace Education officer.

Over the years, Dee has had the opportunity to work and meet many astronauts and cosmonauts, Sally Ride, Alexi Leonov, Scott Carpenter, Wally Schirra, Buzz Aldrin and Wally Funk to name a few.

The opportunity to go into space came to fruition when Virgin Galactic announced its program. Dee is taking the spaceflight experience and living each opportunity that comes up. Training has included the ‘Zero G Experience’ and the NASTAR Centrifuge. Dee was honored that her car was selected to pull Spaceship3 Imagine out of the hanger for the first time and deliver Sir Richard Branson to Spaceship2 for his flight!
